TAKING THE KIDS
TO THEIR FIRST
PANTOMIME
A Christmas pantomime is one of the easiest ways to take kids to the theatre for the first time. Here’s what to expect, so the first one goes well.
This Christmas
RAPUNZEL
IN PERTH
Our panto this year is Rapunzel, at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco from 18 to 24 December 2026. It’s made for all ages, it runs for 2 hours plus a 20 minute interval, and the audience is meant to make noise.
Good Question
IS PANTO OK
FOR YOUNG KIDS?
Yes. Rapunzel is made for all ages, so bring the kids, the grandparents and everyone in between.
A good panto works on two levels: magic and slapstick for the kids, and cheeky jokes that sail right over their heads for the grown-ups. That’s why three generations can sit in the same row and all have a ball.
How long is the show?
2 hours, plus a 20 minute interval. The interval is a good moment for a stretch and a toilet stop.
Pick a Time
WHICH SESSION
SHOULD WE BOOK?
- Fri18 Dec2pm6pm
- Sat19 Dec2pm6pm
- Sun20 Dec2pm
- Wed23 Dec2pm6pm
- Thu24 Dec11am4pm
All times are Perth time (AWST).
With little ones who fade by evening, a 2pm show or the 11am on Christmas Eve is the easy pick.
The Story
WHAT ACTUALLY
HAPPENS IN A PANTO?
A fairy tale, told with big laughs, catchy songs, spectacular costumes and a villain to boo. The same faces turn up every year, and in Rapunzel they are:
The Villain
MOTHER GOTHEL
The wicked Mother Gothel. Boo and hiss as loud as you like.
The Dame
DAME FANNY FOLLICLE
A big-hearted comic character in outrageous frocks.
The Good Fairy
FAIRY DANDRUFF
Here to put things right.
The Heroes
RAPUNZEL & FLYNN RIDER
The two the whole theatre is cheering for.
New to all of it? Here’s what a pantomime is, from the dame to “he’s behind you!”.

TEACH THEM
THESE BEFORE
YOU GO
Panto is the one kind of theatre where shouting at the stage is good manners. A quick practice in the car helps.
“He’s behind you!” when the villain creeps up on the hero. “Oh no it isn’t!” / “Oh yes it is!” back and forth until somebody gives up. Boo! Hiss! every time the villain walks on. And the sing-along: there’s often one before the finale, with one half of the theatre trying to out-sing the other.
Come as you are. Leave a little lighter.
- 01He’s behind you!
- 02Oh yes it is!
- 03Boo! Hiss!
- 04The sing-along
